About the Foothills Football Classic annual event

A Notion Blossoms into an All-Star Annual Community Event

It began as an idea resulting from a trip to Florida by Marvin Berk, a local business owner and in ten short years it has become one of the top scholastic sporting events in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Marvin was in Florida at a Rotary meeting. They had a football game going and it was very successful, and when he heard that, he realized that if they can do that in Florida, we should be able to do it in Western Pennsylvania. With that a Notion of the Classic was Born!

The community was enthused about the game and the possibilities for the students as well as the communities. The game was a good concept that benefited both scholarships and economic development in our communities.

The Foothills Football Classic is an all-star football game to be played by the outstanding graduating senior players from Westmoreland, Allegheny, and Fayette Counties. Thirty-three schools are represented in the game. The teams, are selected by a coaching panel, and split as “North” and South” squads. Route 30 is the Classic's version of the Mason-Dixon line.

The game brings together approximately 75 high school all-star football players from 33 school districts. The demographics of this event can reach over 100,000 people. The players who played against each other now meet and play on the same team. When you know the kids that you played against, and then play with them, it makes better communities.

It takes an enormous amount of dedicated hard work that many community men and women volunteer their time for the youth of today. The Foothills Committee goals are to continue to work with the businesses and communities to create growth, economic development and scholastic programs for our students. We are here to build better and stronger communities for our children. As for the future of the Classic, the Sky's the Limit!
